For me, tattoos are not just ink and needles, they are a way to connect to people, their lives, and their story.

Tattoos, for me, started out just for the art. I had no interest in becoming a professional tattoo artist. I pursued other career paths: B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science, Associates Degree in Civil Engineering, and worked as a Lineman for TVA. However, something was missing. I loved my job, but my passion was not there.

I sat through a sermon from Pastor Jon Henderson and a main point of the sermon was, “Be specific for what you pray for.” I had started tattooing and just by word of mouth people started calling to get tattoos. So, I hit my knees and started praying: God, if this is You, show me “You” in this.

I couldn’t afford a new building or rent for a shop front, but I needed a place to tattoo. So, I asked God… “God, if You are calling me out to tattoo… I need a place to tattoo.” Two weeks later, a man asked if I wanted a building. His exact words were, “If you can move it, you can have it.” This is the same building I am in today.

It wasn’t until my 30th birthday that God started laying the foundation of InkT. I knew there was something big coming but I wasn’t sure what it was yet. I knew I was taking a huge gamble (in human terms) BUT GOD. Long story short, I quit my job as a lineman and started tattooing. I found my passion… but my passion still isn’t tattoos, it’s God. I got to know Jesus more personally than ever before. By no means do I push my relationship with Jesus on people, but I love like He has called me to love. If someone wants to talk more about my relationship or how they can have a relationship with Jesus, I am glad to talk.

The term “Christian Tattoo Artist” is kind of funny to me. I am a Christian that just happens to be a tattoo artist.

If you would like to know the full story of InkT please feel free to ask.

The shop is called InkT (pronounced “inked”). I love math and exponents, so the shop in actually ink raised to the power of Christ.

Love God, love people. It's all about the connection with people. Tattoos are a way for me to do just that.

This amazing journey started back in February of 2017. About 6 months before that I had rededicated my life to the Lord. The only difference this time was that I was going to trust Him every step of the way. I was specific in my prayers asking God, “Other than to grow your kingdom, what is my calling on this earth?” a few short days later Zach had asked me if I would like to apprentice under him, and join him in this ministry. I knew in that exact moment this was it! And I thank Him every day for allowing me to be apart of this ministry.

My apprenticeship started in February of 2017, And by June 4th of 2017 I was in here one night to only stencil a tattoo, Zach would outline the tattoo, and I was to work on shading it in. it was just a simple block cross. Little did I know Zach had already talked to the person about me doing the whole tattoo. Nervous, was an understatement! My apprenticeship/part-time went on until May 24, 2019. That day was my first day full time at the shop.

I’ve been beyond blessed, and look forward to the things to come. I’ve grown so much in my faith, as a person, as a friend, and as an artist. I am very thankful that I get to be apart of something bigger than me, and bigger than just tattoos. God knew exactly what He was doing when placing me here with Zach. If you feel He has called you to do something…STEP OUT! Have faith, trust Him in and through the process. He will guide and provide for you every step of the way.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Tattooing is a way to use the gifts God has blessed me with in a way that can glorify Him. When God gives you a gift of any kind, you are called to use it for His glory. Everyone has a different gift, and all are equally important. We are different pieces of the same puzzle – each different but combine to make the picture. Each person can contribute to grow the kingdom of God. Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

I remember seeing those same verses on a banner above the door in our church’s youth room when I was in high school. I had seen that banner dozens of times, but it clicked with me one Wednesday night – someone had used their artistic abilities to promote God’s Word. We do not have to do a gigantic, ground-breaking feat to give glory to God. It can even be as simple as creating a piece of art. From then, I knew I wanted to use the gifts God has given me in a way to give glory back to Him.

One of the options I had heavily considered was becoming a tattoo artist. After praying about it for some time, I had some friends message about designing tattoos. In March 2021, I finally asked Zach if he would be interested in taking on another apprentice. In May 2021, I graduated with an Associates in Art Studio. In September 2021, I married my wonderful husband, Hunter. In February 2022, my tattoo apprenticeship officially started. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Whatever you are good at, do it well to the glory of God and do it somewhere strategic for the mission of God.

Whether we are at the tattoo shop, in the classroom, at home, or anywhere else, we should look for opportunities to show the love and kindness of Jesus to those around us. Two of my biggest takeaways from a recent mission trip would be to never underestimate the power of prayer and to never underestimate how much a seemingly small act of kindness can do for someone. What could cost us five dollars and a moment of awkwardness could be the difference between life and death physically or the difference between life and death spiritually. Those first few leaps of faith can be so scary, especially if you are way out of your comfort zone, but they are so worth it! Trust God with His plan. He loves you so much. I have grown so much as an artist, teacher, wife, friend, and, most importantly, as a follower of Jesus. I am very excited to see where God will lead me!
